Attract Hummingbirds

The Beauty of the Hummingbird

Attract hummingbirds to your yard and increase its beauty and wildness tenfold. I'm sure it won't take much encouragement for you to decide to attract hummingbirds to your garden. Obedient Plant, Cardinal Flower, Prairie Blazing Star and the Great Blue Lobelia are among the hummingbirds favorite flowers, but why not increase the potential to have this wonderful little bird visit your yard on a daily basis. Putting out hummingbird feeders will ensure that these wonderful pollinators will join you all through the spring and summer, even when you flowers are not yet in bloom. You can also bring them closer to your home for better viewing.

My aunt has this wonderful picture window with three hummingbird feeders hanging just outside. It's like watching a TV show to see them flit right up like that.

Caution

Do not if you have an outdoor cat. Domestic and feral cats are the worst predators of hummingbirds and have driven one species to near extinction. It's always good advice to keep your cats inside, espcecially if trying to build native habitats in your yard. To a cat these are like buffet lines.

Making New Flowers With Hummingbirds

Attract hummingbirds to also increase the pollination of some of the flowers less frequented by bees and butterflies, both of which prefer flower clusters. Hummingbrds prefer long narrow-necked flowers.

Hummingbirds by the Dozens

It may be hard to tell as they zip about, but there are actually dozens of species of hummingbirds living in the US. These pollinators only exist in the new world. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is probably the one most of you are familiar with. Hummingbird feeders can be found at just about every nature store out there, but you can also find ones that wlll add a little whimsy to you garden with a touch of color or artistic touch, such as the ones you'll find at A Birds World or Yardiac. Then fill your feeder with you own sugar water concoction.
